The ketubah is often confused with a marriage contract. It is an agreement between the groom and the bride that protects the bride. A wife keeps it in a safe place and if it is lost, a couple may not stay under one roof for even a night. It is a contract that states, a husband and his wife have obligations to each other and it is a guarantee that in the case of a divorce, the husband will pay his wife a specified amount of money. In truth, the amount paid is arbitrary and it depends on the assets in the marriage.
